&lt;p&gt;Entender los mecanismos y procesos que determinan la distribuci&oacute;n de las especies, su abundancia y los patrones de biodiversidad que generan, es uno de los grandes retos para la ecolog&iacute;a y de manera particular para la biogeograf&iacute;a. Si bien en la literatura existen varios cuerpos te&oacute;ricos que tratan de explicar tales mecanismos, la formalizaci&oacute;n de c&oacute;mo se relacionan los procesos fundamentales de la ecolog&iacute;a (fisiolog&iacute;a, conducta, demograf&iacute;a y dispersi&oacute;n) con los patrones espaciales de la biodiversidad, es un campo a&uacute;n en desarrollo. En este trabajo exponemos algunos problemas relevantes en la modelaci&oacute;n de nichos ecol&oacute;gicos y &aacute;reas de distribuci&oacute;n; estos incluyen la conceptualizaci&oacute;n te&oacute;rica de la relaci&oacute;n entre nicho ecol&oacute;gico y los atributos de adecuaci&oacute;n, el efecto de las interacciones bi&oacute;ticas, el movimiento y los mecanismos de defensa de la presa en los patrones espaciales de co-presencia de las especies. Se muestran resultados de diversos an&aacute;lisis que los autores han obtenido en el estudio de estos problemas con el uso de la modelaci&oacute;n matem&aacute;tica.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Understanding mechanisms and processes that determine the distribution and abundance of species as well as biodiversity patterns over time are one of the most interesting and challenging problems in Ecology, and particularly in Biogeography. Although in scientific literature diverse theoretical bodies have been proposed to explain these mechanisms, the formalization of how fundamental ecological processes (physiology, behavior, demography, and dispersal) and the spatial patterns of biodiversity are related is a field that remains in continuous development. In this work, we describe some of the relevant problems that arise from modeling the ecological niche and the spatial distribution of biodiversity. These problems include the theoretical conceptualization of the relationship between fitness attributes and the ecological niche, the effect of biotic interactions, dispersal and, defense mechanisms on the spatial distribution of a set of species that share a given environment. Results of various analyzes obtained by the authors in the study of these problems with the use of mathematical modeling are shown.&lt;/p&gt;
